Car industry unable to reach CO2 targets?
Publication date: 24 November 2003
The car industry might be unable to live up to its voluntary commitments to reduce CO2 emissions from cars by 2010. Under a voluntary agreement with the EU, the car industry (represented by ACEA, JAMA and KAMA) committed itself to cut CO2 emissions from cars to 140 g/km by 2008 (respectively 2009 for the Asian manufacturers).
According to German newspaper "Handelsblatt" (10 Nov. 2003), ACEA´s report for this year shows that only PSA Peugeot Citroen would meet the targets. In general, the figures are reported to show even a slight increase in CO2 emissions for last year. If the car industry fails to meet the agreed targets, the EU could take legislative action.
The Commission is respected to present its annual progress report within the next weeks.
