Car Safety - Package for more security and less fuel consumption welcomed

Publication date: 13 February 2009

EP Rapporteur Andreas Schwab (CDU) today welcomed Council's agreement to the proposed Regulation on type approval requirements for the general safety of motor vehicles. Improved tire rolling resistance and lower noise values will thus be ensured: "With the package agreed upon today, climate protection objectives in vehicle emissions will be strengthened. Car safety will become the most important factor for motor vehicles in the EU and lasting measures to protect the environment and to lower noise emissions shall be implemented. Vehicle drivers will ultimately profit from substantial cuts in fuel consumption. I now hope for a broad majority in the plenary vote of the European Parliament".

With this Regulation, electronic stability control systems (ESC) shall also become obligatory as an additional safety feature for all vehicles starting from 2011. In order to reduce accidents with trucks, advanced emergency braking systems and lane assistance will also become mandatory. The security of tyres remains the focus of attention whilst at the same time reducing rolling resistance, noise and fuel consumption levels.

The German MEP further stressed: "It is also clear that, in the medium term, necessary additional investments must be undertaken by Member States, especially for new and better rood-surfacing. Only then can noise emissions be substantially reduced for all road transport in the same manner. So far, the Czech presidency of the Council has already shown positive influence and delivered effective results with regard to this Regulation".
