Environmental badge at DEKRA in Brussels

Publication date: 20 March 2008

The new ordinance governing pollutant groups for motor vehicles comes into force in March 2007. It regulates, firstly, the set-up of “environmental zones" and, secondly, the marking of vehicles according to stipulated pollutant groups. Only vehicles bearing the corresponding new stickers on their windscreen are permitted into designated environmental zones. This not only applies to through traffic, but also for residents in the environmental zones. The first environmental green zones are coming in the cities Berlin, Cologne and Stuttgart.

The regulation applies to all passenger motor vehicles and commercial vehicles irrespective of propulsion type (with combustion engines – petrol, diesel or gas – and with electric motors). Vehicles registered abroad also require the stickers in order to be permitted to drive into environmental zones! This designation of lowemissions vehicles is intended to help reduce the amount of fine particulate in cities
in particular.

The stickers will come in the three colours, green, yellow and red, each conforming to a particular harmful substance group.

The green sticker covers motor vehicles with the lowest particulate and harmful emissions, such as, for example, motor vehicles equipped with the most modern diesel technology and virtually all petrol-engined motor vehicles fitted with a computer-controlled catalytic converter. The yellow and red stickers for diesel motor vehicles are assigned in further stages. Poorly categorised vehicles cannot obtain any sticker (vehicles pollutant group 1). The basis of this categorisation is firstly the emissions code number given in the vehicle documents.
