FIA contribution to the EC reflection on the future of transport policy

Wil Botman, Director General of FIA European Bureau, was a guest speaker in the European Commission conference on the challenges and opportunities for the transport sector in the next 20 to 40 years. Enhanced road safety and passengers' rights are one of  the key priorities of the FIA clubs ofr a better future mobility.

The Director General actively contributed to a workshop tackling passengers transport and intermodality issues. He addressed the issue from the consumers' perspective, building on the member clubs' expertise in that field. Putting a clear focus on sustainable and safe transports for consumers, he presented some of the keys for an efficient transport policy in the future: 

• be based on relevant facts and good analysis

• not see modes of transport as communicating vessels

• support the needs of Europe’s citizens

• further enhance the benefits of mobility rather than charge the user for its drawbacks

• foster investment into road infrastructure for safer, cleaner, smarter and affordable mobility (e.g. TEN-T)

• create the framework allowing public transport to become more efficient and better integrated

• promote safe walking and cycling

• be integrated into other policies (land planning)

• foster innovation

• include tourism as a major trigger for mobility
