FIA to cooperate with CORTE for improved road safety

Publication date: 19 July 2006

On 6th July last, Werner Kraus, President of FIA, Europe signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enter into cooperation with CORTE (Confederation of Organisations in Road Transport Enforcement) in the field of enhancing road safety and the freedom of mobility of European citizens.

CORTE's objectives include:
• Provision of expert advice on international road transport legislation;
• Establishment of common interpretations of road transport rules and their enforcement;
• Development of harmonised best practice enforcement methodologies;
• On-going enhancements of the above-mentioned objectives;
• Active collaboration and provision of a discussion platform for international institutions/organisations, public authorities, private institutions (National and International) and consultations with the road transport industry, vehicle and equipment manufacturers, driver associations and lobbying institutions.

FIA will seek to emphasise where possible that enforcement is used in parallel with training and awareness-raising as the means to improve road user behaviour. The promotion of lifelong learning in the field of road safety is a stated common goal of both organisations.
