Final report on Mobile Services for Tourism presented

Publication date: 06 September 2003

Today, the final report of the EC Working Group on "Mobile Services for Tourism" was presented to the Tourism Advisory Committee. The working group was set up in 2002 and included Peter Mikolaschek/ADAC and Franco Agostinucci/ACI as AIT-FIA representatives.

The key findings of the report are as follows:
- There is a severe lack of dissemination of information about the subject. Many tourism players are not aware of the potential opportunities mobile services offer for tourism.
- Slow progress in the development of mobile services is attributed in part to the collapse of the telecoms sector.
- The area identified as having the greatest potential for innovation and impact on tourism is the development of location-based services provided predominantly via the car.

Following presentation to the Commission it is hoped that resources will be found for encouraging development of this area from the research budgets.
