Irish Presidency: Priorities regarding Transport

Publication date: 17 December 2003

In its working programme published today, the Irish Presidency (1 January to 30 June 2004) ruled out its priorities.

In the transport sector, the Irish Presidency will focus on measures aimed at stimulating growth in an enlarged Union. It will work with the European
Parliament towards adoption of the revised Trans European Networks proposals, recently agreed within the Council. Mechanisms to provide incentives for modal shift away from roads where there are feasible alternatives will be pursued, in particular through measures to provide for the internalisation of the external costs of road transport. The momentum towards the development of Europe’s strategic capability in satellite navigation will be maintained by promoting the Galileo project.
