Results on Advanced Safety Features and Tyres Consultation
Publication date: 13 December 2007
A summary of replies was published on 13 December 2007 by the Directorate of Enterprise and Industry following the consultation on Advanced Safety Features and Tyres launched by the Commission in August 2007, in which the FIA contributed.
Main comments raised by stakeholders were published together with initial responses by the Commission. About 81 stakeholders contributed to the public consultation mainly on simplification issues, advanced safety issues, and tyre issues.
About 81 stakeholders contributed to the public consultation mainly on simplification issues, advanced safety issues, and tyre issues.
On simplification issues, vehicles manufacturers considered that new regulation is not necessary, and simplification would be achieved by referring directly to UNECE Regulations within Type-approval Framework Directive
Concerning advanced safety issues, stakeholders suggested that additional safety features should be mandate, such as alcohol locks or Intelligent Speed Adaptation. On AEBS, vehicle manufacturers agreed that it is too early to mandate on those systems, and components manufacturers said that AEBS could be possible for new types of heavy vehicle by 2010, light commercial vehicles by 2012, and cars by 2014.
On tyre issues, vehicle manufacturers found noise standards unfeasible; however, environmental organizations argued that noise standards were not sufficiently ambitious. Moreover; respondents considered rolling resistance banding unambitious and suggested the need for technical specifications for TPMS, such as level of accuracy.
