Parking badges for disabled drivers

The EU model Parking Card for people with disabilities – Blue Badge – is standardized across the EU and EEA. In practice, it means that a disabled Blue Badge holder from one member state may enjoy parking privileges when visiting another member state.

However, while the Parking Card should be similar in all member states, where and when it may be used varies from one member state to another.

FIA believes that more should be done to build on this, and is actively working in cooperation with Bert Morris (consultant) toward:

• Persuading countries worldwide with no Parking Card scheme to adopt one
• Working towards world-wide standardization of Parking Cards to achieve international recognition
• Achieving reciprocity for Parking Card holders when they travel to another country
• Providing Parking Card holders with information on reciprocity and parking concessions in other countries around the world

The FIA European Bureau launched a worldwide survey in 2010, in order to draft a comprehensive FIA Guide for the disabled travellers. This tool will be available online for all citizens with disabilities and give worldwide information for disabled travellers on where and when their Parking Card can be used in their own country/state, and any reciprocal arrangements between countries for card holders visiting another country.

The FIA has, via its national motoring and mobility clubs gathered the inputs from a great number of countries, as displayed by the maps below:

The website to be launched by the end of this summer will provide visitors with the following information:

• Availability of dedicated parking spaces
  
• Where you may use your parking card (as a country national/visitor)
• Conditions for parking on roads and in car parks
